How do solar panels work?

Solar panels are an increasingly popular and ‘clean’ technology that harness the power of the sun to generate electricity. A solar PV panel is made up of many cells that are constructed from semi-conducting material, usually silicon. When sunlight hits these cells, it creates an electrical current that can be used to power your home or business.

Solar PV systems are typically made up of several panels, with each panel generating around 355W of energy in strong sunlight. To convert the DC electricity to AC, an inverter is installed along with the system. Our solar team is ready to advise you on getting the perfect solar panel package to match your home and budget, and we’re now able to offer appointments by video calls.

Local authorities have funding available to help low-income households improve the energy efficiency of their homes. Low-income households (those whose annual income is less than £31,000) can apply for funding so that their homes may be made more energy efficient. Measures include Solar PV installations, loft insulation and underfloor insulation. The aim is to help people save money on their energy bills and improve the quality of life in their homes. In recent years, there have been several updates to the ECO Framework. The latest update—ECO4—differs from earlier versions of the framework in some key ways:

The government has announced a significant increase in the maximum amount of funding available to energy suppliers.

The list of eligible energy efficiency measures has been expanded to include storage heaters, electric vehicle charge points and solar PV systems with a capacity up to 50kW.

Inflation has increased the income thresholds that determine eligibility for many types of assistance.
More money is being awarded to people who use air source heat pumps and insulation.
